Day 11 - Midday

Jake has hit two huge milestones this morning.....

First, the doctors have made the call to remove his ICP monitor from his head. They made the call because his ICP readings have been steady and normal since late last week. He is still at risk for vasospasms, but he is definitely on the backside of the risk curve. The procedure to remove the ICP monitor will be performed later this afternoon.

Second, they have started the process of removing his breathing tube.  His breathing rate has been changed from 28 down to 24. He will be monitored and then re-evaluated in a couple hours. If he tolerates the change, they will dial it down some more. The goal will be a rate of 8-12. At that time, they will transition to "pressure support trial", which means he will be breathing on his own, with the respirator still in for backup. If all goes well, then they will extubate. This process will happen over the next couple days.

Staying the course.......

I am so thankful that the progress is steady. My husband Dana Smith and I would like to know if there is anything that we can do for you. Knowing your concerns are with Jake, is there anything at the house we can do for you? Grass cut, cleanup at home? I am available 24/7 and I am an experienced caregiver. If you need a break or anything that we can do, let us know. I will be checking your calendar daily for updates as well. My number is 303-358-2888 and my name is Barbara. I am forwarding Jakes information to our church family. Know that the prayer warriors are standing with you.

  3. Yay for milestones! I also wanted to let you know, Dana, that if you need any help with taking care of Luke, I am available now that school is out. Even if he and a friend want to go to a movie or something. You did a great job talking to the kids at school. They have been so concerned, and I think it really helped to hear from "Jake's mom" yesterday.

    Love and prayers, Linda Goodenow
